2011: Year Of The Rabbit, Or Of The Pouter?

The children have been learning about Chinese New Year over the last week at school, so we ran over to the Bellagio yesterday to check out the new display in the Conservatory.

I always thought we put on such great Chinese New Year displays and festivities in Las Vegas, because we have a relatively large Asian population.

The newspaper says we put on such airs to attract the Asian tourist here to celebrate, so we can separate him from his money.

Confucius say, a fool and his money are soon parted.

Oh, wait.  Was that Confucius? Or Oscar Goodman?

I got confused when I was there, because I wasn't sure if it was the year of the Rabbit, or the year of the Pouter.

Austin was messing up my energy when we were there for sure.  These are the sort of things that happen when other people press "CASINO" in the elevator and it is your turn.

It is an example of the daily catastrophes that happen every single time we do anything.  It took me several years to stop taking everybody's mood personally.  I am far enough into the parenting gig now to know I am not responsible for making every single person happy, 100 percent of the time.  If you have triplets and you haven't learned this lesson, you will have a nervous breakdown.  Trust me on that one.

Now they are old enough that I can tell them that they choose their mood.  If they choose to pout or whine or have an unpleasant time, I will not be brought down to their level.  So while Austin did not enjoy himself, the rest of us did.

We talked about it later.  I told all of them that they are responsible for their happiness.  They can choose to be happy no matter what they are doing, or they can choose to be miserable.   I choose to be happy most of the time when I am out and about.

So I choose to ignore every little tantrum and then people usually snap out of it, right as the next one starts.

The Bellagio never fails to impress me.

The terracota warriors were covered with crushed walnuts and carrot seeds.

I need to get four of these tai hu stones.

The kids put my ch'i out of whack 75 times a day and I need something synergistic for my two yins and two yangs.

Or maybe a trip to Hawai'i would work just as well, which is coming up in just 10 short days!  Not that I'm counting, or anything.  Get the hammock ready, Leslie.

I haven't mentioned it, but I don't have a ticket.  I am flying stand-by, so I don't know when I'm leaving for sure or what exact day I'm coming back.  One things for sure, I will be happy no matter what.

Thanks for sharing your Chinese New Year pictures! I've been interested in it since I was in London in 2008 doing an internship program. One of my friends was at the British Museum & helping organize their celebration was one of her big tasks, so we all went to the event & it was a great time! Plus they had a special exhibit of terra cotta warriors which was so amazing. Your pictures are a great reminder!

Austin reminds me of our boy who was always bored and cynical at that age. I remember being at a 4th of July parade, bands playing, drums pounding, flags flying, people saluting, the air full of pride and excitement and this brat saying, "Can we leave now? This is boring."

Good for you with your attitude, I love it. I stayed home for years and years because my husband would not go anywhere that we could take the kids. He "deserved" peace and quiet on his weekends. It killed me, but I never thought to take them by myself. Have fun in Hawaii with Leslie. You deserve it!

Anon- Austin is usually my pleasant, easygoing child. Amanda makes it her goal in life to sabotage every outing. :)

Greg's back is completely out and he worked for Bob yesterday anyway. I mean, completely out. He REFUSES to go to the doctor. So I take the same philosophy with him as I do the kids. He chooses to be in pain because he refuses to seek medical care. God helps those who help themselves, so we are off to Red Rock today!

Oh, lordy. If Greg's completely unable to move I'd be calling 911. Dummy could end up paralyzed and let's face it, you don't want to lose that Hawaii trip!

He will.not.go. His back has been bad for 2 weeks. He is walking around like a hunchback. He seems to think it would suddenly heal itself and he will continue on his SEVEN day ski trip in 2.5 weeks. UGH.

Austin looks pretty cute even when he's pouting.

By the way, there are Marines headed your way. My son and his company have a class in Vegas this week and then they are hitting the strip. I can't decide if I want to send you out to spy on them or live in ignorant bliss. He keeps telling me he's going to marry a show girl and bring her home when he graduates from this phase. *gulp*

Thanks for the photos @ Bellagio, they are fabulous. A lot like the Rose Parade. I would love to go to Vegas sometime and just look at everything but my husband would lose the farm. He likes to gamble and I can't stand it. BTW, I am happy the Bellagio Bandit got caught. What an idiot!

michele i would hate for greg to have a bulging disc that could herniate, he will go then, because he won't be able to walk from the sound of his current issue walking, sometimes they can be decompressed and avoid herniation, i would have given anything to know this before it happened to me, i just figured it was muscular, not
