After our devastating news yesterday, followed by very little sleep because we were up on an adrenaline rush, we got up and took a bus over to Monaco today.
You guys, we know NO French. We have absolutely NO IDEA what we are doing. It is like the blind leading the stupid. But somehow we have just managed to get by with no planning, no direction, and absolutely no problems, if you don't count this broken down old barge we are on.
You have to love public transportation in Europe. We just hopped on the bus and found our way to Monaco, where we got to see the real Monte Carlo casino.

Monaco is absolutely gorgeous and clean and everywhere you look, you see fabulous, beautiful people in fabulous, beautiful clothing.
See them in this picture?

It was so good we got off the ship and went on our own. The atmosphere back at the ship was ugly and negative and horrible. You could not believe the panic. I felt so bad for the staff. People were unrelenting in their anger and they were just FREAKING OUT. All I could think is that we are getting a one hundred percent refund on our cruise. Laurie has an extra 3000 to play with, so what is the panic here?

We ran into our BFF and asked him where he was going now and he said, "According to these people, to hell in a boat without a rudder."
Then he begged us not to leave him when a pack of unruly Nearly Deads approached us. And one of the Nearly Deads found my blog yesterday and left me a pissy comment that I deleted, telling me I will be that old when my kids are out of high school. Okay. I suck at math, but I am certain I will NOT be 110 when the kids get out of high school. And if I ever get old and mean and lose my sense of humor, well I expect you all to track me down and slap the hell out of me.
Has life never thrown these people a curve ball in all their many, many, many years on earth? From the day I laid on an examining table and the doctor told me he saw three heartbeats, to the day I stood in the neurosurgeon's office and he pointed to a golf ball size tumor in my baby's brain, there is NOTHING you can throw at me now that will even FAZE me.
Stranded in Europe with a $3000 spending limit. Boo hoo. You would have thought somebody told these people they were having triplets. Gah. I hate to point out the obvious, but we could have broken down AT SEA. AND DIED.

We toured the palace of Prince Whoever Lives There. We are clueless.
Then we drank lots of wine and laughed and toured the cathedral that Prince Rainier and Princess Grace were married in.

I have a confession to make. I did not know I was not supposed to take pictures in the cathedral. Laurie and her sister and aunt were HORRIFIED. These girls are Polish Catholics from Chicago. Laurie's aunt is the youngest of eleven children. Laurie has like a thousand relatives. They are some serious Catholics.

The cathedral was gorgeous and Laurie and I lit candles for our deceased moms and Mrs S from Chicago. Edited to add: I guess you CAN take pictures. So there, girls.
Then we even managed to find the correct bus back.

Then we put on our black dresses and ate like queens at dinner.
Tomorrow, we go to Nice and our hotel. We have decided to spend the two nights in Nice, then fly to Rome on Monday. Booking a cruise on the Titanic may have been our best move ever.
HAHAHAH You go girl. Suck it up and deal with being stranded in Europe. If only I was that unlucky lol. You will love Rome, you MUST MUST MUST eat as much Gelato as you can. The chocolate mousse gelato will make you want to stay there forever.
ReplyDeleteAgain great commisterations at being standed in one of the most beautiful places in the world, I truly feel for you.
The prince's name is Albert. His father was Prince Rainier who married Grace Kelly both of whom are buried in the cathedral. You CAN take photos inside the cathedral.
ReplyDeleteIf you are shipwrecked at least it is in a beautiful spot. I am sorry to hear that it is nasty on board. I am doing the transatlantic on the Century on Oct 25th so hope she is repaired by then.
I love your blog and thank you for keeping us up to date. Enjoy the rest of your time in Europe.
1. Yes, you can take photos inside the cathedrals and churches unless it says otherwise (You cannot take any in the Sistine chapel, ever, they will take your camera and probably unpleasantly arrest you).2. I found it very interesting in Italy where they have one of the priests/cardinals/popes? buried under plexi-glass. You can see the coffin. Freaky weird. 3.I took photos. 4.I will probably burn in hell. 5.I'm from Chicago (I'm a south-sider, they will know what that means ;-), and I know several people with 1,000 relatives, maybe I know some of your friends relatives. LOL!
ReplyDelete6. The unruly nearly dead that found your blog no doubt found it through a son/daughter/great, great grandchild that actually found your blog first...I have no doubt. How many of them have you seen with a smart phone? ahem. Anyway, I'm glad you will be bidding the RMS Titanic adieu and heading onto better things with a $3,000 budget. Keep it close inside your vest when you go to Italy, gypsies are everywhere...don't take anything from children, or bend down, or let them touch you...they will steal everything. I also have no doubt that if you had broken down at sea the nice US NAVY would have come rescued you. just because the rudder doesn't work does not mean you would die (unless it broke at the shaft and started flooding the bottom of the ship (the cheap/nearly deads cabins no doubt?!...just FYI from a NAVY wife...been there, done that. Anywho...life raft-situation averted enjoy the rest of your time in Europe...and by the way, LOVE the WHITE and BLACK top!
oh, i love you!!! and i told my husband you said, "newlywed and nearly dead" and he thought it was the funniest thing ever...
ReplyDeleteOh, I don't know, Michele. After reading your blog for almost three years, I'll predict you're gonna be some cranky-ass 110 year old. Especially if somebody messes with your sixty-something kid!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what happened to that comment. I thought I had read wrong. I figured to much wine with my PVC's I suppose. I feel better now that I really am not losing it. other than when I went to Yosemite this is the longest it has been since I haven't talked to you!! My life does feel strangely stress free without your 20 calls a day drama about CHICKENS. I think we bring out the drama in each other. SCARY.....
ReplyDeleteThis sounds almost better than the cruise! Well, at least you're making it sound that way. Rome is awesome! The architecture is incredible. Enjoy it without the old folks :)
ReplyDeleteMary- I'm sure it will be fixed. I am very pleased with the rooms and the food. The Celebrity chef on this boat makes everything from scratch. The food is really wonderful.
ReplyDeleteNancy- I know you miss my drama. Kisses.
I just read in the newspaper that the colisuem in Rome is opening the "dungeons" below to the public for the first time EVER next week. Please go there so I can live vicariously through you!
ReplyDeleteGlad to see everything is working out for you... good thing you aren't 110! How are Greg and the kids holding up?
The best vacations are the ones where you can wander and do whatever you'd like! Have fun :)
ReplyDeleteMichele -- you are incredible. I LOVE your attitude. Now, hopefully that "broken-down old boat" can be repaired quickly because we are supposed to board her on the 25th of October for the transatlantic cruise back to Florida.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your surprise trip to Monaco and everywhere else you get to visit -- now you've really got a story to tell when you get back to LV.
We were on the Century for a similar cruise last month. So sorry to hear that this all happened during your vacation. It seems that you live each day as it comes at you...I can't think of a better way to do it. Enjoy the rest of your adventure. I second the motion about the gelato...I ate and blogged my way through Europe two weeks ago, and I still miss the food.
ReplyDeleteHere's another link with comments from some who are in contact with relatives onboard. Note that it is described as "total chaos." I imagine that some probably had $5 more than they thought they'd need and really are hysterical.

Sorry to hear your cruise has been cancelled but glad you've decided to go to Rome. Good call! France is fine, but Italy is superb. Three of my five top European cities are Italian: Rome, Florence and Venice. (The other two are Berlin and Stockholm.) And it sounds as if the people on your ship were vile, so you'll have more fun in Rome without them.
