The Grass Is Greener

I don't want to freak anyone out, but I started juicing my own wheat grass last week, and if I have a shot of wheat grass juice in the afternoon, I no longer need a cup of coffee to get me through until bedtime.

GASP!

Is anyone else a wheat grass juicer, and if you are, what machine are you using? I need to buy one that doesn't cost $200.

After my week of robust afternoon energy, Greg came home sporting a diet Pepsi with vitamins and touting it as his new healthy energy drink. Then he proceeded to tell me about the man who lost 80 pounds on the Mc'Donald's diet and how McDonald's isn't so bad after all. I'm sure that man is just the picture of health. I sure hope he's drinking his diet Pepsi with vitamins or he might end up with beri beri or pallagra or rickets.

I swear, Greg and I live on different planets.

Speaking of vitamins, I've been reading a new book this weekend, Twinkie, Deconstructed and learned that almost all of our vitamin ingredients are made and manufactured in China, regardless of where the actual vitamin is ultimately put together. The only vitamin ingredients not made in China are niacin, which is made in Switzerland, and iron, which in made in Indiana. The reason all the vitamin plants moved to China is because producing vitamins is extremely bad for the environment and their environmental standards are very low.

Since all white flour in the United States is required to be "enriched", every time you eat anything with white flour in it, you are getting your nutrients from some petrochemical plant in China, instead of anything even remotely resembling food. MMMmmmmmmm........ yummy.

But one ounce of wheatgrass has the same nutritional value as eating 2.5 pounds of organic vegetables and my kids like it!!!! So I think we are going to give up taking vitamins, much to the dismay of the "vitamin man". (Shhhhhhh..... don't tell the kids that the UPS truck isn't the Vitamin man. I order most of our vitamins online and have them delivered and they named him that.)

Since I can't afford to buy any meat that eats grass, I'm just going to drink grass.

Or maybe I'm smoking grass............................

Or talking in circles.

Hi Michele!
"The only vitamin ingredients not made in China are niacin, which is made in Switzerland..."
Ha! As I said before, you're welcome here. Even more reason to come. LOOOOOOOOOL

I'm quite surprised that you give your kids vitamins. Here around people don't give the kids any vitamins, only if they've been sick for a long time.
Anyway, tomorrow is the day, isn't it? I'll be thinking about you and Austin!!! All my thoughts are with you.
Take care

What does wheat grass taste like?

Michelle

Michelle- it tastes exactly like your lawn smells after you cut it.

Anna- It's amazing but all the niacin in the world comes out of a little alpine town, north of the Matterhorn, called Visp on the Lonza river. Who knew????

Now I konw - and, I already ordered this book! It made me curious!
I knwo Visp, been there a couple of years ago. It's not the Lonza River, but the Lonza company that males the niacin. The River ist the Rhone or the Vispa.
It's alway so interesting what you find out - keep doing that!

"The commonly held assumption that a 30ml shot of wheatgrass juice is nutritionally equivalent to a kilogram of vegetables is a complete myth. A floret or two of broccoli, or a tablespoon of spinach, contain more folic acid and vitamin C than 30ml of wheatgrass juice. Chlorophyll is not absorbed into the body (or else we would all look an attractive shade of green), and its supposed high levels are no higher than other green vegetables. "

ANON- Is this GREG? Is the IP address coming from inside the house? Don't make me link a thousand links to refute that! LOL!

"Who drinks grass?"

We just had bacteria for lunch. Grass will be a snack after naptime. You want to come over for dinner? :0

Delurking. I use the Powerfull MJ550 for juicking wheatgrass, but it does cost $200. It's so worth it. I have fibromyalgia and have been symptom free for several months after drinking wheatgrass every day. It's a powerful body cleanse in addition to providing amazing nutrients and enzymes. It also builds red blood cells. I've read your blog a long time, never commented, but if you are still anemic, you should see a big difference in your energy level. Enjoy! I love your blog!

Delurking! You crack me up! Love the picture. I am half way between you and greg. I love healthy eating and have found it is almost impossible to do with little money. So sad. Anyhow my ex was healed of a terrible skin condition with wheatgrass 20+yrs ago. I have no personal testimony but I think there is something to it.

You can do wheatgrass shots at Jambajuice also...I was doing those when I lived in Tucson and was starving for energy...

"I no longer need a cup of cofee to get me through until bedtime." Can you say PLACEBO EFFECT?

Or are you putting caffeine shots into your wheat grass?

How come the anonymous comments on the wheat grass post? I think she's nuts to drink grass too, but I'm not afraid to sign my name!

Leslie- who knew that the poor little wheat grass was so maligned and unloved? Actually, one of those anonymous comments was from Greg's BFF. Those two are like clones. If he would just give me one of his grass-fed Longhorn steers, I wouldn't have to drink grass.

It is NOT the placebo effect, either. I just had a shot about 20minutes ago and I swear to you, it's like drinking a cup of coffee. AND I SHOULD KNOW WHAT THAT'S LIKE, SO THERE! :)

Can you find a used juicer on Craig's List?

Michele,
Actually the "Who drinks grass" comment was from Kellie. You can have a Longhorn for free. Transportation is on you...or maybe Greg can pick it up in the minivan. We truly wish you the best with Austin. Have the G-man call me.

Kellie- this blog is PG-13. Don't make me pull out the parental controls here. :) You crack me up! Hope you are feeling well.

Rob- I love the picture of Greg driving home in our minivan with a giant Longhorn in a trailer behind him! So who would have thought YOU would be growing environmentally better and humanely raised cattle? That's crazy, ain't it?
