Aspartame and MSG: A Lesson In Excitotoxins

Let's get serious today and talk about the artificial sweetener, aspartame. Aspartame will make you sick and fat. You shouldn't eat or drink it, especially if you have diabetes or other autoimmune diseases like Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis, or if you are prone to migraines, or if you have a child on the spectrum .

First, I'd like to say that this is not a scientific blog. I am not a scientist. I am just a mother of a lot of kids, who happens to have a keen interest in food additives and what I'm feeding my children. I came to have this interest because one of my daughters is especially sensitive to food additives, and as I researched how I could avoid them, I became more and more interested in how they affect your overall health and well-being.

To really explain why aspartame is bad for you, you really have to understand what sort of food additive aspartame is. Aspartame is an excitotoxin. Excitotoxins are neurotransmitters that cause excitability and rapid firing of neurons in the brain, followed by massive brain cell die-offs. You can click on the link I provided to read the scientific reason this happens.

But in layman's terms, they cause your brain cells to die. Do I need to be killing off perfectly good brain cells on purpose? I'm fairly certain I've lost a record number giving birth to four kids in a 16 month period. Also, do I need to be killing off brain cells in my children? No, I think not.

The most common excitotoxin is MSG, or monosodium glutamate. MSG is found in almost all processed food. You almost can't buy ANYTHING that's processed that doesn't contain a form of MSG. MSG is marketed under many many different names. Here are the most common names:

MSG
Gelatin
Calcium Caseinate
Monosodium glutamate
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP)
Textured Protein
Monopotassium glutamate
Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP)
Yeast Extract
Glutamate
Autolyzed Plant Protein
Yeast food or nutrient
Glutamic Acid
Sodium Caseinate
Autolyzed Yeast
Vegetable Protein Extract

Before 1969, baby food was actually loaded with MSG. It wasn't until a neuroscientist named John Olney proved that MSG caused brain lesions in infant rats that congress banned the use of MSG in baby food. The damage was already done however. Dr. Olney has published studies indicating that early exposure to MSG causes visceral fat accumulation and a preference for sweet tasting food and carbohydrates which causes obesity. But it's out of baby food now, right? So we don't have to worry anymore, right?

Wrong. The minute you start feeding your children table food that's processed, they begin eating vast quantities of it. Children are most susceptible to MSG damage before the age of three. It doesn't surprise me in the least that some parents with children on the spectrum start seeing regression in their children's behavior at around 18 months.

Dr. Olney has also spent the last 25 years trying to prove that aspartame has the same effect on the brain, as it contains 40 percent aspartic acid and is an excitotoxin just like MSG. He strongly oppossed the approval of aspartame by the FDA.

So why is aspartame on the market at all when the FDA advisors strongly advised against ever allowing it in beverages or food? Click on this time line to read how aspartame was discovered and brought to market. It's fascinating and if you really think that the FDA is here to protect us from drugs or food that could hurt us, then you are very naive. The FDA commissioner is appointed by the President and the drugs and foods that are ultimately on the market are a direct result of political paybacks and political connections.

Guess what evil corporate giant owned the patent on aspartame? Guess! Why MONSANTO of course! Is there a question? What don't they have a patent on?

But if you aren't a link clicker, essentially aspartame was discovered by accident in 1965 by a doctor who was working on an ulcer drug. From 1967 until 1981, the company J.D. Searle who owned the patent at the time, tried unsuccessfully to get aspartame approved for use in food. Guess who the CEO of J.D. Searle was back then? Donald Rumsfeld. When Ronald Reagan was elected President in 1981, he brought Donald Rumsfeld aboard and old Rumsfeld immediately had Reagan appoint one of his old cronies as the Commisioner of the FDA.

The new Commissioner immediately turned around and approved NutraSweet against the FDA doctors advice and the recommendation of the Public Board Of Inquiry.

Wow! That's a freaking big surprise!!!!!

But aspartame still wasn't approved for use in liquids. Why? Because when liquid aspartame is heated to more than 85 degrees, it turns into formaldahyde. In 1983, the National Soft Drink Association strongly opposed the addition of aspartame in carbonated beverages because they knew how unstable it was. However, saccharin was being taken off the market. They needed something else and they needed it quickly!

Because it's really all about money and power, not safety. As soon as everyone realizes that, then you understand how things really work. In 1983, aspartame was approved for use in soft drinks.

One third of the aspartame molecule is methanol, a wood alcohol. If you have diabetes, the last thing you should be putting into your system is alcohol. Yet diabetics are one of the biggest users of aspartame. If you read the book by neurosurgeon, Robert Blaylock, Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills, his decades of research indicates that aspartame actually causes the progression of diabetes and retinopathy of diabetes. The last thing you should be eating if you are diabetic is aspartame.

Have you ever known someone addicted to diet pop? That happens because of the methanol in the aspartame. Read this if you are a diet soda addict.

Aspartame makes you fat too. After the die-off in your brain from the excitotoxin overload, you will crave carbohydrates. If you want to lose weight, quit drinking diet pop. Pre-packaged diet foods are loaded with sometimes as many as 4 or 5 different forms of MSG. Excitotoxins are even worse when they are consumed together. If you are washing down your Lean Cuisine with a Diet Pepsi, you are at the most risk for neurological damage and unhealthy weight gain specifically in your abdomen.

If you have a child with ADHD, you absolutely do NOT want to be giving that child anything with excitotoxins in it.

I've become especially concerned with the evidence of brain tumors that Dr. Blaylock and Dr Olney are attributing to the use of aspartame. I was drinking a lot of diet soda when I got pregnant with Austin. Something caused him to develop a brain tumor. Was it just bad luck? I guess I'll never know.

And finally, if you have an extra 1.5 hours watch this documentary, Sweet Misery - A Poisoned World.

So what am I doing to keep excitotoxins out of our house? I avoid diet sodas. I avoid mainstream soups, salad dressings, dips, spices, and "flavored" products, like crackers or chips. In other words, if I were to buy chips I wouldn't get "barbecue" flavored. I would just buy regular chips, which would be less likely to have several forms of MSG in it. We never buy anything sugar-free. We eat good old-fashioned sugar here. We only eat out occasionally since restaurant food is loaded with MSG.

You know, I just want to feed my kids real food without giving them brain damage. That's all I'm really trying to do here. But the brain damaging food tastes so damn good, doesn't it?

Oh, Michelle. While I love reading your blog, I don't love it when you make me think too much. I would much rather stay in my naive little world, thinking that 'they' have our best interests at heart. Now, I am going to have to go read all these links. Sigh...Although, I have been cooking alot lately from scratch, and you know what...It tastes better!!! Fancy that!

Question, in your last paragraph you mentioned that you avoid spices, can you tell me what you mean by that. Do you mean dried herbs, or things like onion powder, etc. Just curious as to what I need to be looking out for!

    Thanks,
    Jackie (momma to twins)

  2. I avoid the spices like Lawry's seasoned salt or lemon pepper. Those are just MSG if you read the labels. I use real herbs and spices. Like I use a lemon pepper that has a grinder that I get at Trader's and it's just lemon peel and pepper. It doesn't have the MSG additives.

  3. Great post Michelle. What would we do without Trader Joe's??

I know you have some info on Splenda as well - when are you going to share that??

I'm using some of the links you posted to try to convince Jim to switch from that dang Diet Mt. Dew he's always carrying around to water. Then again, I've been trying for 10 years!. The only thing I don't like is the boys take sips of it - and it kills me when they do.

  4. Thanks for such an informative post...one of my triplets has been formally diagnosed with Celiac disease- an auto-immune disease completely controlled by diet. With a gluten free diet his regression and ability to get nutrition from food is controlled. Red dye #40 and other toxins trigger his symptoms too, and now I am wondering about nutrasweet. We are trying to have him gain weight so we do not give him diet products but thanks to your post there will be no more diet soda sips for me or any of my kids.

    Your blog rocks!

  5. I love to read your articles on this subject and some people might think its cooky. Im passing along this aticle to my mom. She is addicted to Sweet n Lo. She eats Lean Cuisines and then drinks diet soda. UGH! She thinks shes eating right. Yesterday, we took the kids to McDs. (We've gone there twice) They had about 2 McNuggets each and some fries and they pooped runny crap 2 times yesterday! NO Surprise there. I do everything to avoid all this stuff. I shop alot at Whole foods and try to buy the best food for my family. Frozen veggies, no canned. My kids LOVE black beans. Anyway Im rambling, but I read your blog every morning. Keep up the good fight sister!

  6. Laraine- Good luck! He's probably very seriously addicted to it. With him being a diabetic, NOT GOOD! Try and get Dr. Blaylock's book. He talks about how the aspartic acid binds with insulin and how dangerous it is for the diabetic. Very good stuff!

  9. Thank you for the post! (And thanks for the links/references - you rock!).

When you start to think about how processed the majority of the food in the market is, it reads like a VERY SCARY science fiction novel. Why do we believe that something that goes through eight different transformative processes could possible be good for us? The marketing machine is GOOD.

I would love it if you would post simple recipes - like some of your favorite homemade salad dressings. That would be so helpful in taking the baby steps away from all things processed.

    Again - thanks!

  10. I love it when you post this stuff. So many people believe that the government agencies (like the FDA and CDC) are there to protect consumers. But it really is all about politics and money.

The things we put into our bodies are undoubtedly causing the health problems we see so frequently today. The additives, hormones, and pesticides in our food, the heavy metals in vaccines, and the chemicals in our personal hygeiene products are so dangerous.

People think our family is strange for eating whole foods, extended breastfeeding, and just generally living as naturally as possible. Slowly, as more of this informtion comes to light, I think more and more people are going to start living the way we do because it just makes sense.

For now I'm content to be the "tree-hugger" that people probably think I am...

I thought I was feeding my family homemade healthy foods, and when I read your blog, I went and looked in my fridge and pantry, and was shocked at how many of my "Natural" foods had some form or another of MSG. It surprised me that MSG can go under so many different names. While I never buy food with Aspartame or Sweet N Low etc, I can't believe how they sneak so much junk into our daily diets. Thanks for your post. I will now be on the lookout for those additives in our food.

  13. I just have to say that I agree with you on the aspartame and MSG's. I have never allowed my kids to have any of the sugar free loaded with aspartame foods/drinks. Only I did not do it for the reasons you posted. I never did any research I just knew that Sweet N Lo gave me migraines! It's not natural and tastes awful. Also, a good friend of mine was addicted to Equal. She would make a gallon of sweet tea using 40 single packs of Equal! She had a major brain bleed at 30 and almost died. She blamed the BC pills and smoking. I thought the combination of all three is what almost killed her. Now, she is a diabetic, over weight and fighting depression. She still uses 40 packs of Equal for 1 gallon of tea!
Someone asked for a good dressing recipe I hope you don't mind me posting one my family loves. Also the plus of making my own dressing is that the kids like it so much better than the bottle stuff.
    Buttermilk Ranch Dressing
    1 cup buttermilk
    1/4 cup sour cream
    1 clove of garlic diced
1 Table spoon of white vinegar
Several dashes of hot sauce (to taste)
1 Table spoon of fresh parsley chopped
1 Teaspoon of dried dill or fresh if you have just use more
1 Teaspoon of dried chives or fresh if you have just use more
    Salt & Pepper to taste
    Mix together and serve.
The plus with this recipe is that my DD is allergic to eggs so I don't make anything with Mayo in our house.
    Thanks for the informative post!!

  14. Great information! I used to teach students with autism and they were NEVER allowed anything with aspartame in it because of the very visible affects it would have on their behavior and body. And it's not just limited to people with autism, obviously.

Michelle, thanks again for a great informative post. After reading one of your past ones, my fiance and I no longer eat bagged lettuce. I'll pass this information on to him (the grocery-shopper in our household) so we can avoid this stuff too. Thanks again for saving our diets, one less food additive at a time!

Audrey, who posted three posts above me -- thanks for sharing your salad dressing recipe. Your blog link profile isn't available to me, but I'd love to read your blog. I'm not a crazy person -- I'm in law school right now, and I read these mommy blogs because being in law school doesn't give me enough time to babysit like I used to in college, and I miss being around kids! This way, I get to do it virtually. If you'd allow me to read your blog, e-mail me at ladydevilfan AT yahoo DOT com (devils, referring to my college mascot, not to some devil worshipping cult.)

    Michele,

  18. I am a scientist. I believe in survival of the fittest. Those brain cells fit to survive will. That's why I drink wine in large quantities. I'm killing off those cells that are just causing me to weigh more.

Seriously, I'm very careful about the food that I feed our kids. I'm much less cautious about the crap I ingest. Although I NEVER drink soda, I do eat a lot of chocolate. But to offset that, I eat lots of raw veggies and juice. The worst thing that the kids eat is Charlie's FAKE syrup on their waffles.

My love for Trader's has waned. I was sorely disappointed in the way they handled the Garbanzo Bean Beetle fiasco. All the cans were left on the shelves, even after a friend who trades in a different TJ store, opened her can and found bugs in that one, too.

OK Michelle~~I love these posts but they leave me so cofused and rather overwhelmed. I live in a rural area with virtually no access to organic and natural ingredients. I have really been making a conscious effort to feed our family more healthfully but it is a lot of work.

I have been ordering Annie's natural and organic products online for snacks and occasional meals. I have a question for you about them. The "Bunny Pasta with Yummy Cheese" contains "natural sodium phosphate"--this is a preservative, is it not? Are there preservatives, per se, that are safe or better than others. When I google Sodium Phosphate it appears that it may have detrimental side effects, but the damn package says no artificial anything and totally natural. To me this implies safety. I feel duped by the food industry and if I can't trust "Annie" who the hell can I trust? I don't have a box of Kraft Mac n cheese so I cannot compare labels. I am inclined to suspect a significant amount of presevatives--am I safe to assume that the Annie's is better although not the best as compared to homemade. The "Bunny Grahams" contains calcium carbonate, also a preservative. In a quick google this preservative appeared to be more inert. If so, I will assume that "Bunny Grahams are a healthier alternative to "Honey Maid" grahams which contain soy lecithin.

See how crazy this makes me???

I would love a look in your pantry. Maybe you could create a virtual tour and educate us all about the alternative products available. Like the lemon pepper---I had no idea there was an alternative. Just an idea.

Thank you for making me think today!

I also shop at Trader Joe's now for most things- and it makes such a big difference in my life. I am a healthy, fit, not overweight 30 year old woman- and I'll tell you that back when I consumed aspartame daily, I felt horrible- probably twice my age. Thanks again for posting this!

  23. I am 68 years old and extemely allergic to MSG. I just want to add that if your body cannot tolerate it, you will become more and more sensitive to it the more you ingest it. I am now treated for Crohnes. If you find that your child is sensitive to it, please make a real effort to rid their lives of all products that contain it. Trader Joes food is a good start and then just get more fresh vegetables, fruits. Eat them raw and the kids will love them and it will be less work for you, just wash them well, cut them up and put them on the table.

    Hi Michelle,
I'm addicted to your blog (will I die from that?) and am commentin from all the way over in Iceland.
I never use artificial sweeteners though, hate all things "diet" and like you have described, often have trouble gaining and keeping my weight... Hmmmm...
Have you read the book "Good omens" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman? A VERY funny book, among the protagonists are Death, War, Famine and Pollution (still a VERY funny book...). Anyway, Famine invented a diet where the "food" was completely void of nutrition, and ranged from fast food to chic restaurants. It became a great hit, "no matter how much you ate, you lost weight - and hair, and skin tone, and if you kept on eating it... vital signs".
Your post reminded me of that chapter, you can by and eat a lot of food without ever getting any nutrition. Looks can be deceiving...

Anyway, it is my recommended reading for flights and beaches (which you'll be using soon, no?)

I am a type 1 diabetic and am so because of the combination of genetics and a virus I had in my mid-20s. I have no diabetic complications and my A1c is consistently in the non-diabetic range. I drink diet soda rather often. The sugar content in a single regular soda is about the same as my entire carbohydrate intake at a meal. Maybe I should stop eating and just drink soda all day instead?

Diet Soda Addicts- I have no idea how you kick the habit. I know I used to drink one or two a day every day no matter what and I've essentially replaced that "addiction" with coffee. So now I'm just addicted to coffee. I only drink coffee, water, and tea. I know that 11 days Greg was out of town, I drank his diet soda four days in a row and then I ate an entire bag of Reece's from Valentine's Day and gained 5 pounds in a week. I NEVER gain weight!

    great info!

I thought I should point out, however, that one of the details is incorrect. You stated "When Ronald Reagan was elected President in 1981, he brought Donald Rumsfeld aboard and old Rumsfeld immediately had Reagan appoint one of his old cronies as the Commisioner of the FDA."

When I clicked on the Wikipedia link for Donald Rumsfeld, it says that he worked for G.D. Searle until 1985. He wasn't working for the Reagan administration when Reagan appointed the FDA Commissioner in 1981. So at that time, Rumsfeld was still the CEO of G.D. Searle and in that role he applied for the FDA approval.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anon- NO, he WAS still the CEO of J D Searle while he was working as an advisor for the Reagan Administration at THE SAME TIME. This is why this was seen as a HUGE HUGE HUGE conflict of interest.

  42. Hi Michele, great information but I'd like to suggest that you DO NOT toss out those little blue packets of Equal! Hold on to them and next time you see ants coming into your kitchen take them outside and sprinkle the white powder all around the doorway and the foundation of the house. I have found it's an effective poison!

Also, please don't despair, everyone. You don't have to grow your own wheat and bake your own bread or raise chickens on the balcony of your condo. For the past 33 years my family has been using the Feingold diet (www.feingold.org) and we quickly learned how to find the foods we love in the versions that are free of the worst of the additives....not just MSG and aspartame but also the FD&C dyes, artificial flavorings and the worst preservatives. It's not about giving up processed foods, but in finding those processed foods that are the better choice. Today it's easier than ever to find suitable stuff, even if you live in a small town. Most supermarkets have good stuff lurking amid the rubbish. There are things like natural Cheetos, Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix (it's the one without the artificial flavoring) and Kraft makes a mac & cheese with white cheddar.

The non-profit Feingold Association researches brand name foods and prints books listing thousands of brands that are free of things like dyes. And each year we publish a fast food guide...well, there's loads of MSG in fast foods, but at least we let you know where they are. Oh, by the way, if you want to avoid MSG don't do "Chick-fil-A" They use an astonishing amount of the stuff.

More good news, Coke is working hard to get the FDA to reverse their long-standing rule to prevent stevia (a natural, safe, calorie-free sweetener) from competing against the drug company's sweeteners. Coke wants to cash in on the desire for a diet soda that won't do bad things. Meanwhile there are at least two brands of calorie-free sodas that are sweetened with stevia, but they aren't too easy to find. The companies get around the FDA by calling them "supplements" not sodas.

Anyway, my question for you is what do you do about preschool and what your children are given at preschool?

One day my children were given blue Hawaiian Punch (as part of the "nutritious snack") and they were up until midnight!! When I read the label of ingredients in that junk, I nearly began to hyperventilate. I have since told their teachers they are sensitive to artificial dyes and not to give them any drinks like that.

  45. You're making this sound very very scary, but a lot of this is much less scary than it sounds. For example, you mention that aspartame creates FORMALDEHYDE, and of course we all picture pickled dead baby pigs. But small amounts of formaldehyde are a part of our normal digestion. If you drink 100% fruit juice made from organic fruit, your body still creates small amounts of formaldehyde in the digestive process. It SOUNDS bad, but it's actually normal. Same thing with methanol: it sounds TERRIBLE, but it's normal even if you don't eat any aspartame at all.

Also, many studies have directly contradicted some of the claims you present here. Of course, this means people need to be wary, and CLEARLY much more research is needed. MUCH more! But you're making it sound like a "DUH!!!" subject, when actually lots of very smart people are on both sides of the issue, and for equally good reasons. People who are interested in a more balanced presentation of the material can check out Wikipedia's coverage of the subject.

  46. Swistle- I've read all that. I chose not to believe studies that are funded by the food industry. Call me crazy. But in truth, I have living proof about what I write about. I can give my daughter that crap and just watch her reaction to it. It takes about two hours for her to go ballistic. That's all the proof I need. She is like a different child when she's not given that stuff.
